Depression Is Not Just Sadness: Common Signs People Overlook

Depression is often described as sadness, but many people experience it differently. Some feel irritable, numb, or emotionally “flat.” Others keep functioning at work or school while feeling exhausted inside. Depression can also show up in the body, not just in mood.

Common signs people overlook include changes in sleep, such as insomnia, early waking, or sleeping far more than usual. Appetite may shift toward overeating or loss of interest in food. Many people notice low energy, slowed thinking, or difficulty concentrating, which can look like laziness or lack of motivation. You may withdraw socially, stop enjoying hobbies, or feel overwhelmed by tasks that used to feel manageable. Physical symptoms like headaches, stomach upset, and muscle tension can accompany depression, especially when stress is high.

Depression can also affect self-worth. Persistent guilt, harsh self-criticism, or feeling like a burden can be warning signs, even when you cannot name a specific reason. If thoughts of self-harm or suicide appear, it is important to seek help immediately.

Support is available. Depression is treatable with therapy, lifestyle changes, medication, or a combination. If symptoms last more than two weeks or interfere with daily life, a professional evaluation can help clarify what is happening and what steps can help you feel better.
